Nicknamed Ski Town USA, Steamboat Springs, Colorado is an ideal winter destination for anyone who likes snow. Skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, ice climbing…you can do it all in Steamboat Springs. Located in the Rocky Mountains about 160 miles from Denver, this town is slightly off the beaten path, but worth the effort and quite popular with tourists.

Once you get here, you’ll find everything you need within a short distance of your hotel and a myriad of activities that will keep the whole family busy all year long with snow-related and indoor activities in winter and water sports and hiking in the summer.

The Steamboat Ski Area on Mount Werner is the place to go to get in touch with nature by skiing or snowboarding. Remind yourself how much you loved playing in the snow as a kid by gliding down the slopes and feeling the champagne powder beneath you. After a day on the slopes, you can warm up and relax in the natural hot springs nearby.

In summer, hike Fish Creek Falls (the falls on the Coors Beer label), Rabbit Pass, or Mount Werner. Relax in Steamboat Hot Springs while breathing the fresh mountain air, kayak the Yampa River, or go camping. Even in summer, Ski Town USA is filled with fun ways to enjoy the great outdoors.

Outdoor destinations are great for kids. You can wear them out on the slopes or at the pool and then put them to bed early to get some alone time. Mount Werner offers plenty of beginning and intermediate slopes where you can ski or snowboard with the kids or you can sign them up for lessons. You can also take them tubing in many different places, day or night.

In the summer, go tubing on the Yampa River. You can rent large inner tubes and float down the slow-moving river through downtown Steamboat Springs. Life jackets are provided and parents can share tubes with young kids so everybody can have a fun and safe day.

If your kids like horses, consider taking them riding. Many ranches offer lessons and rides in rings at the ranches or on adjacent trails. You can book a ride tailored to the needs of your family and your level of riding experience. There are many easy trails with scenic views of the summer wildflowers, creeks, ponds, and even the Yampa River.
