Overview
Before setting off for Somalia, do a lot of research and make sure it’s something you really want to and/or need to do. A civil war based on border disputes has been underway for many years with few signs of an end to the conflict. If you decide Somalia is on your must see list, then hire a guide and look into hiring bodyguards. It’s a war zone, so solo travel is not a good idea. In some areas, traveling alone is illegal and a guard must accompany you at all times.
Somaliland is the safest region of Somalia (and also a fascinating destination). The capital, Hargeisa, has some museums and a zoo of local animals. Elsewhere, you can explore some natural wonders like extensive caves with cave paintings dating from 9,000 B.C.E. Enjoy SCUBA diving? Head to any of the islands of Zeila for the opportunity to dive where few travelers have before.
AdventureThe risk of suicide bombings, kidnappings, and random armed attacks on civilians are part of a trip to Somalia. Period. There is no way to travel in this country without being at risk of such happenings. Border regions are particularly dangerous as the borders of the country and the regions within are disputed. You may want to hire several bodyguards and you will want to stay under the radar. On the water, piracy is quite common. In fact, the U. S. State Department recommends that American ships sailing near that part of Africa stay at least three hundred miles from the coast.
NatureThe beaches near Mogadishu are stunningly beautiful with white sands and clear blue-green water. You might see families enjoying the beach or you might run into some less than savory types, depending on where you go. No matter which beach you end up on, note that women must swim fully clothed in respects to local laws.
Some areas of Somalia are primarily desert where you will find cacti of many species in the long expanses of sand and scrub brush broken occasionally by a rock formation rising above the horizon. Since this area has long suffered from violence, few foreigners visit here so you are likely to run into some truly exotic flora and fauna that those of us in the west have not yet seen – a naturalist’s dream. You’ll also be able to spot classic African species like giraffes, zebras, and ostrich.
