Overview
Ipanema. Copacabana. Legendary beaches. These are the beaches of Rio de Janeiro. Located on the Atlantic, this Brazilian city is home to some of the most famous beaches in the world. Miles of white sand arc along Guanabara Bay separating the vast Atlantic from the densely populated metropolis. The coastline is studded with the high peaks of Sugar Loaf Mountain, the Tijuca hills, and Corcovado Peak. It is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.
Beyond the beach, Rio is a city with a steady pulse. It is both relaxed and fast paced, perfect for lazy beach days followed by nights out dancing. You can hike the peaks, soar over the city, or just dance. Rio is home to a massive carnival celebration every year. The carnival spans the final four days before Lent and allows everyone to let loose before the spiritual period of Lent begins. While carnival is celebrated all over the world, Rio is known for the largest and most famous celebrations.
AdventureIn Rio, you may never stop moving. There is always something to do and much of it requires a taste for adventure.
With the high peaks and stunning vistas, Rio is the ideal destination for hang gliding and plenty of companies are willing to take you. After a quick lesson, you can strap in and fly over the Tijuca Forest, ultimately landing on the beach.
Surfing and kite surfing are popular off the coast. You can bring your gear and head right in or hire someone to give you a lesson. The coastal winds make kite surfing particularly exciting.
